Yep, They can't remove the signals since the road is narrow for a few hundred yards. That is why the signals were installed. Otherwise, without the signals. I assume that these sensors detect vehicles and make the light go to red. Not really a bad idea but that house has clearly been unoccupied for a very long time!
They use "microwave sensors" to detect vehicles. Some lights in driveways or businesses use a pushbutton unit to change the lights to red so they can get through without causing an accident.
