Re: Arnold Street, Cullman, AL
*originally recorded on 9-2-24*
Signal on the far left: 1 pair of WCH 12x24 inch lights with Leotek EV Series LEDs, an NEG electronic bell, a Siemens gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the far right: 1 pair of WCH 12x24 inch lights with Leotek EV Series LEDs, a Siemens gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the near left: 1 pair of WCH 12x24 inch lights with Leotek EV Series LEDs, a Siemens gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
Signal on the near right: 1 pair of WCH 12x24 inch lights with Leotek EV Series LEDs, a non-functional NEG electronic bell, a Siemens gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
After catching I129 again, nothing else seemed to be in the area so I went and grabbed some lunch. After lunch, nothing else seemed to be too close, though I heard about an M521 going south through Decatur, so I decided to wander over to this crossing and wait on it. After a little while of waiting, I was able to get my fourth train of the day here: CSX M521 with a CSX CM44AC leading a CSX ES44AH, a BNSF Dash-9, and a KCSM ES44AC for power! Definitely nice to see a bit of foreign power, even if it was trailing.
The upgrade to this crossing is now complete for Alabama's first quad-gate crossing in the state. Strangely, the closer bell here doesn't work, not sure if the wiring to it was bad or if the bell's just simply a defective unit and either arrived dead or has already died. Either way, the one working bell here strangely shuts-off when the entry gates have lowered, which kinda reminds me of the way French quad-gate crossings operate. Either way, it's nice to see a quad-gate crossing here in Alabama, obviously the quiet-zone this is for ain't in effect yet at the time of filming this video so the train was still blowing its horn.
I will miss the classic L&N gateless signals here, especially since they had one of the last two mechanical bells along the S&NA North. Now the last mechanical bell on the entire line can be found at Moulton Street, and is thankfully still there last I saw.
Also, the raisable bollards next to this crossing were up at the time of filming. I don't believe any events were going on at the time, and it appears they were just up due to the set on the other end of the block being worked on.
Per the Cullman Tribune, this crossing became part of a quiet zone on September 16th, meaning this was the last video I got of this crossing when trains still blew their horns for it:
